FuseLogic connects government portal to eHerkenning

For a government institution, we built the integration between their portal and eHerkenning. This portal is used by large numbers of citizens and businesses to exchange highly privacy-sensitive information.

From password to eHerkenning

With the introduction of the Dutch Digital Government Act, logging in with eHerkenning has become mandatory for businesses. This replaces password-based authentication. eHerkenning is a secure and reliable authentication method that enables businesses and organizations to log in to over 500 different service providers, such as UWV, municipalities, the Dutch Tax Authority and insurance companies. With eHerkenning, service providers know for certain who they are doing business with and users have the assurance that access to these online services is safe and reliable. This is important because sensitive information such as medical, financial or personal data is often exchanged.

Guiding principles

In addition to complying with the upcoming Digital Government Act, the portal needed to remain as user-friendly and accessible as possible. Citizens and businesses must be able to securely exchange privacy-sensitive information, and the risk of fraud or misuse had to be minimized as much as possible.

The role of FuseLogic

In this project, which also involved rebuilding the existing portal, we were involved as an Identity Management knowledge partner. Based on our knowledge of and experience with eHerkenning and eIDAS, we advised on the optimal configuration of Identity Management within this specific environment. Also, FuseLogic built the integration between the front end and the Identity Management solution used, using both standard and custom components.

This solution was integrated into the full DTAP pipeline. Prior to the go-live, we built a test page where businesses could test their eHerkenning login credentials and we resolved any issues that arose.

In September 2023, the environment successfully went live, after which businesses could no longer use their username and password, but instead log in easily with eHerkenning.
